About 5,000 residents of Abonnema have fled their homes due to fear that the Army may avenge the death of its 3 officers killed by gunmen in the community.
Speaking to newsmen, A traditional ruler in Akuku Toru local government area, Alabo Tonye Douglas pleads with the Federal Government to investigate critically the alleged killing of 3 Army officers in the community and bring the killers to justice, as residents of the community are living in fear.
According to him, “What happened during the Presidential and National Assembly elections in Abonnema is unfortunate and we totally apologize to the Federal Government and the Army. “In this case of Abonnema, there was huge importation of thugs into the community, causing the security men who were trying to provide security to become casualties”
“We beg the Army to temper justice with mercy. The development has made things difficult. ”We are encouraging our people to stay, but our people are still leaving the community because of fear of reprisal.”
According to him, “The military is a peaceful and disciplined group, that are slow to anger, with strict adherence to its rules of engagements, but when provoked in some peculiar situations, no one can predict their actions.
Mr Douglas, A former Minister of sport described the killing of the soldiers as unfortunate, putting the blame on some political Thugs in the area. He further called on the Federal Government to investigate the killings and prosecute the culprits.
