On Saturday 16th, the day of the postponed presidential elections, it came to notice that the Corps Members participating as officials for the Election were kept in unsatisfiable conditions.
It is reported that the election body, INEC, in charge of the welfare of the Corpers, did little to provide a good environment for them. Corpers slept outside on mats and provision for security was not met.
The National Commissioner for INEC, Adekunle Ogunmola, in a live interview with newsmen, said the entitlement of corps members had been paid, when asked if the Corpers were compensated. He said that the Independent Electoral Commission collaborated with the officials of NYSC.
He confirmed that the sleeping provision made for the Corps Members were mats and that no provision was made for shelter. He also said that the commission spent billions to acquire the mat for the corps members.
According to him,“the reason for this is that when going for election, its like going for war. Another reason is that they will spend only two hours of rest so providing mattresses for over more than two thousand corps members is quit on the high side”.
He reiterated that no provision was made for security, but that security was made for INEC officials alone for the protection of electoral materials.
Although some states have been compensated, Port Harcourt Corps Members are saying that the entitlement is yet to be paid. The Corps Members wanting to opt out of participating in the elections are told to write a letter of no interest.
