Kamaru Usman, a Nigerian born a welterweight fighter and mixed martial artist from Benin city popularly known as “the Nigerian Nightmare,” has become the first ever African fighter to win an ultimate fighting championship (UFC) title.
He won the mixed martial arts (MMA) bout against American fighter, Tyron Woodley, dominating the Las Vegas contest for the welterweight title. The UFC which is the biggest competition in MMA, where competitors combine boxing, kickboxing, Jiujutsu wrestling, and other disciplines while fighting in an octagonal cage.
Usman, aged 31, produced the performance of his career to dominate the ever long-reigning welterweight champion, Woodley. He maintained his unbeaten record in the UFC by extending his winning streak to 14.
In his post-match press conference, Usman revealed that before the match he had fractured his foot and had been working around in a supportive boot all week.
In his press conference, he stated that he had told Nigerians that they can make it.
“Nigerians, I have told them, we would do it, I told them we never fail and we have done it today.” he said.
